52-year-old man injured in Andheri bridge collapse dies in hospital after 26 days

The Vile Parle resident was standing on Andheri’s platform no. 8 for a Dahanu local when the debris of the bridge fell on him.

Manoj Mehta, 52, who was severely injured in the Gokhale bridge collapse on July 3 at Andheri, died on Sunday evening in Nanavati Hospital, Vile Parle. Mehta was a qualified charted accountant (CA) and a successful builder for the past 35 years in Boisar and Palghar.

An official statement from Nanavati Hospital confirmed that Mehta died on July 29 owing to multiple organ failure.

“Mehta stayed in Vile Parle and would commute daily to Palghar to oversee his construction business. On July 3, around 7am, Mehta was standing on platform 8 waiting for the Dahanu local to arrive when the debris of the bridge fell on him,” said a relative

He was admitted to the intensive care unit of Nanavati Hospital with spinal and other injuries.

“Manoj still fought for survival but death won,” said his brother Rajesh.

“Since the last two days, Mehta’s condition had worsened,” said Padam Sharma a member of the Rotary Club of Palghar of which Mehta was a key member. Despite his busy business schedule, Mehta would regularly contribute to the Rotary Club activities said Sharma. Mehta is survived by his wife and two daughters.

The funeral will be held on Monday morning.
