Mumbai commuter held for assaulting official managing crowd at Kurla station bridge

The accused was walking in the opposite direction of the crowd.

An officer of the Maharashtra Security Force (MSF), Genesh Rajendra Patil, was beaten up by a railway commuter on Thursday after he was instructed not to cause an obstruction to other commuters at the foot overbridge at Kurla railway station. Patil and his partner were managing the crowd at the Kurla Bridge when Patil spotted a man walking in the opposite direction of the crowd. Patil intercepted the man, identified as Kudus Khalil Hussain Sayed, 25, and asked him to walk in the opposite direction.

Sayed, a resident of Kasaiwada in Kurla (East), began hurling abuses at Patil. When Patil retaliated, Sayed attacked Patil. “Patil then raised an alarm and alerted his partner, who nabbed and detained Sayed,” said police inspector, Suresh Atri, Kurla RPF. Sayed was produced before the court on Friday, where he was asked to pay a fine of ₹3,000 or serve a 30-day prison term.

Following the Elphinstone Road station stampede, which killed 23 people and injured 34, the Railways have posted MSF staff at all stations to control the crowd.
