A family picnic turned into a nightmare after a 30-year-old man drowned in the swimming pool of a bungalow at Gorai on Sunday evening. The man, Kunal Luniya, and 50 family members had booked a bungalow for the picnic.

Luniya did not know how to swim. He stepped into the pool along with others and drowned around 4.30pm, said the police. He was taken to Tembha hospital in Bhayander, where he was declared brought dead, said an officer. From Tembha Hospital, the body was sent to Bhagwati Hospital in Borivli for a post-mortem.

Rashmi Karandikar, deputy commissioner of police and Mumbai police spokesperson, said, “As per the preliminary investigation, an accidental death report (ADR) has been registered. The Gorai police has been investigating the incident.”

Police have recorded the statement of Luniya’s father.

Senior inspector Shivaji Jamdade of Gorai police station said, “There were no lifeguards near the swimming pool and it was around six to seven feet deep. Several boys were inside the pool along with Luniya.”
