Mumbai Elphinstone Road stampede highlights: 22 dead, 35 injured; CM announces Rs 5 lakh compensation

A rush hour stampede during a sudden monsoon downpour killed at least 22 people and wounded more than 30 on Friday at Mumbai’s Elphinstone Road station.
The tragedy took place amid rain in the city around 10:40 am when the foot over-bridge was heavily crowded.

3:10: Stampede at Elphinstone Road station is a “public massacre” by the government, says Shiv Sena member of parliament (MP) and spokesperson Sanjay Raut.
2:30pm: Elphinstone Road foot-over bridge to be expanded on immediate basis, says Railway minister Piyush Goyal after visiting the station.
1:54pm: Shiv Sena chief Uddhav Thackeray arrives at KEM Hospital.

1:32pm: Chief minister Devendra Fadnavis announces Rs 5 lakh compensation for the next of the kins of deceased, says all medical expenses of the injured will be borne by the Maharashtra government.

1:11pm: KEM hospital confirms 55 casualties and releases names of victims. In all, 22 have died, including 13 men, 8 women and 1 child, and 33 have been injured, of whom there are 24 men and nine women.

12:58pm: Five National Disaster Response Force personnel reach the spot.

12:12pm: Senior railway officials have reached the Elphinstone Road station foot-over bridge to monitor relief work, added Jain.
12:10pm: Mukul Jain, divisional railway manager, Western Railway, said, “About 30 persons are reportedly injured. The accident relief medical team has reached the spot, and medical assistance is being provided to the injured.”
11:59am: An eyewitness, who was standing at the station platform when the incident took place, said, “Commuters started panicking after somebody shouted that the bridge was collapsing and that there was a short circuit. People started pushing and those in the middle of the stairs fell. Many commuters who tried to escape through the railing got stuck.”

11:38am: Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) officials confirm that three people were brought dead to KEM hospital in Parel.
11:32am: Railway officials said that the stampede occurred to due overcrowding and heavy rainfall. “It is not a bridge collapse. Both the Railway Police Force (RPF) and Government Railway Police (GRP) are on the spot,’’ said a senior railway official.
