Man jumps into Bhikha Behram well in Mumbai, rescued

The police and firemen reached the spot within 15 minutes

The police on Tuesday rescued a man, who jumped into the Bhikha Behram Well at Churchgate.

According to eye-witnesses, the man, who seemed to be in his twenties, rushed into the compound and jumped in. Nadir Tangri, caretaker of the well, said, “He went under the water for some time, but then started swimming. When he was tired, he caught hold of the pipe (used to pump out water for the drinking fountain).”

The police and firemen reached the spot within 15 minutes. “We asked him to come out,” said Tangri. When the man refused to come out, a policeman went down with the help of a ladder and pulled him out. “I think the man was mentally disturbed,” said Tangri.

The well is sacred to Parsi-Zorastrians. Viraf Kapadia, member of the well trust, said they offered tea and biscuits to the frightened man. The trust said the well will be drained and cleaned with jaggery and lime. “Just as a precaution,” he said
