Mumbai-Pune expressway pile-up: 1 dead, 2 injured as four vehicles collide

A person died while two others were injured after four vehicles piled up on the Mumbai-Pune Expressway near Khopoli on Friday morning.

According to the police, the accident took place on the Pune-Mumbai lane around 6am in the area, around 35km from Panvel city.

A container which was coming towards Mumbai first hit a truck near Dheku village.

Both the vehicles came out of their respective lanes just after the accident only to get hit by a bus which was also moving in the same direction.

“Within a few minutes, a tanker on its way to Mumbai rammed into the three vehicles on the highway,” said a police officer from Khopoli police station.

Even as the reason behind the accident is still not clear, the police suspect the heavy rain may have led to the accidents. “The driver might not have seen the roads properly,” the officer said.

“The container driver suffered severe injuries in the accident and died on the spot. Two other people also got injured, but we are yet to ascertain the vehicle they were driving. They have been admitted to a nearby hospital. Prima facie it appears nobody from the bus suffered injuries in the accident,” he said.
