Around 150 to 200 residents from different parts of Thane are coming together on Tuesday May 1 to clear all the plastic waste strewn around in Yeoor Hills. With the aim to revive its beauty and maintain the anti-plastic initiative taken by the government, residents have taken this step. It was the brainchild of a few residents who named the campaign Earthly Responsibilities.
“Few of us came up with this idea to help the environment, as we were disheartened with the loads of plastic found in Yeoor hills, we decided to start the campaign from there. Yeoor is the crown of the city and as residents it is our moral duty to keep it clean. When we are looking at a plastic free city it includes our forest areas as well, this is just the first step and we shall surely work on various other cleanliness and anti-plastic drive across the city,” said Shailesh Sharma, one of the volunteers.
The initiative started with 10 to 12 people and through word of mouth they have managed to gradually include almost 150 residents for Tuesday’s drive. “We have taken permission from the forest department and the Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) also has agreed to send a garbage collection truck to help us. We are amazed at the response,” said Shivani Joshi, another volunteer.
