ULHASNAGAR: Three youths were electrocuted on Monday night after an electric wire fell on a Ganesh idol which was covered with a wet plastic at Ulhasnagar. The youths were sitting on an iron trolley and two died.

Shaken by the incident, Jai Mata Di mandal of Ulhasnagar decided to immerse the idol at Ganesh ghat in Kalyan. The dead are Hitesh Talreja,17,and Hitesh Sachsev, 20. Another youth suffered injuries.

On Monday, the mandal got the 15-ft-idol idol from a Parel workshop around 9.30am. Around 10pm, the group reached near Super Point Hotel when the Ganesh idol touched an electric wire. “As the idol was covered with wet plastic, two mandal members were electrocuted,” said a mandal member.

He added, “The two were college students. The mandal members are in shock and decided not to celebrate the festival. Instead of taking the idol to the pandal, we immersed it.”
