MUMBAI: The long-pending demand to upgrade Deonar abattoir has been finally approved by civic chief Ajoy Mehta. Forty years after the slaughterhouse was constructed, Rs1,066 crore have been allotted for its upgradation.

To avoid any disruption in the meat supply, temporary arrangements for business will be made inside the abattoir vicinity, said civic officials. Yogesh Shetye, general manager of the abattoir, said, “The work will be carried out in phases and the supply of meat will not be disrupted. Tenders will be issued by October first week.”

In a first, a rendering plant for disposal of slaughterhouse waste as per Maharashtra Pollution Control Board will be constructed in the abattoir. Fresh water pumping station, effluent treatment plant, an administrative building, meat laboratoriesand municipal dispensary have also been proposed. BMC also aims to construct a shed for animals during Bakrid.
