MUMBAI: Gangster Mohammed Aziz Abdul Salim Khan, who was arrested by the state anti-terrorism squad for jumping parole, had planned to murder a former Congress member of parliament from Navi Mumbai, said police sources.

During interrogation, the police found no evidence to link him to any terrorist organisation, but learnt that he had hatched a plan to eliminate the former MP, a prominent builder and father of a BJP MLA.

“Thane-based Daighar police are investigating the case to find out if he was acting at somebody’s behest to kill the former MP,” an officer said.

Before he could execute his plot, investigating agencies foiled his plan by arresting him on Thursday.

Khan was convicted and sentenced to life imprisonment for a dacoity-cum-murder in 2010. On December 14, 2015, he was released on parole from the Kolhapur jail owning to his purported family trouble. After the leave ended, he did not return to the jail and a case was registered with Daighar police station.

Police sources said that while various agencies were hunting for Khan, he kept changing his location to evade arrest. He was arrested from Turbhe. ATS officials had earlier suspected that Sultan had left the country to join the ranks of the ISIS.
