THANE : The police on Sunday arrested Jagdish Kanani, 33, an alleged investor in one of the illegal call centres at Mira Road, which are currently under investigation for acting as fronts for a multi-crore tele scam.

Thane police commissioner Param Bir Singh told HT Kanani was arrested from his house in Borivli on Sunday morning. A local court has remanded him in police custody till October 20.
Singh said, “Kanani ran two illegal call centres in Malad. On October 4, the Thane crime branch had raided seven call centres located in an IT park in Mira Road, and four in another building in the vicinity.”
Soon after the raids, Kanani shut down his call centres in Malad. The police learned about Kanani’s connection while interrogating the employees of the call centres in Mira Road.
Singh said, “Kanani worked as a trainer in an illegal call centre in Mumbai in 2012. After learning the tricks of the trade, he set up his own call centre in Malad. We are yet to come across anything that could link Kanani and mastermind Sagar Thakkar. We are recording his statement.”
According to the police, Kanani grew up in Chennai and moved to Ahmedabad a few years ago. The police have, so far, raided more than a dozen of call centres. On Monday, the police recorded the statement of over 100 staffers. The police suspect that Thakkar did not keep any account in an Indian bank and made investments abroad through foreign banks. They are also keeping a tab on social networking sites as they suspect the absconding accused might try to establish contact with their family using new accounts.
