According to the officer, four of the six have been admitted at different private hospitals in the city, while the remaining two are yet to seek medical aid. “Senior police inspector Rajendra Nikam is admitted at Raiphura Hospital in Kandivli,” said the officer, adding, “All of them fell ill over the past eight days.”

According to the officer, the roof of the police station is covered with tarpaulin sheets on which rainwater kept accumulating — a potential breeding site for mosquitoes carrying the deadly virus.

“A team of civic officials has inspected the police station and undertaken appropriate steps to prevent the mosquitoes from breeding,” he said.

The civic body, in its latest health report, has confirmed that two dengue deaths have been reported in the city so far. While the first dengue death was reported in January, the vectorborne infection claimed another life between September 1 and 14.

A 45-year old woman, who had come from Malvan to visit her son in Vikhroli, died of the infection on September 8, said a civic official. Her medical reports suggested that she suffered from fever, headache and giddiness 10 days prior to being admitted at a hospital in Powai, where doctors diagnosed her with dengue. She was later shifted to BYL Nair Hospital in Bombay Central.

“The aedes mosquito, which is a carrier of the virus, attacks during the day. People need to exercise caution and watch out for mosquito breeding in and around their houses,” Dr Padmaka Keskar had told HT.
