MUMBAI: Sakshi Rajwani, who could not secure a seat in first year junior college (FYJC), despite scoring 99.8% in the Class 10 state board exams, was thrilled on Tuesday when she got a call from VG Vaze College, Mulund.

“We were told I have been allotted a seat in the management quota. We rushed to the college and got my admission done,” said the SSC topper Rajwani, 15, who will pursue commerce.

“The experience shook me completely. This was a life changing and a stressful experience. However, I’m more than happy to have got a seat in the college of my preference. It means a lot to us after the chaos,” she said.

Rajwani, a student of Sacred Heart School, Kalyan, had scored the highest in the city. However, she was not allotted a seat in the first merit list.

On inquiring with the state’s education department, she was told that an error by her school had left her application blank. Following this, education minister Vinod Tawde intervened and notified the deputy directorate of education to admit Rajwani to Vaze Kelkar College through the management quota.

“A student who had got a seat in the management quota was able to get into the open category list, and hence that left the seat vacant. That is how we placed her,” said Vidyadhar Joshi, vice-principal, VG Vaze College.

Joshi said confusion during the admission process is because children and parents do not read the admission booklet. “In this case, the child could have been more careful. When the general merit list came out and her name didn’t appear, she should have immediately got the problem rectified,” he said.
