The Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) razed more than 85 shops and residential structures obstructing the road-widening project at Manpada on Ghodbunder Road in Thane west. The drive was carried out to pave way for the service road to be constructed along this stretch from Majiwada to Brahmand Circle.

“There are 511 unauthorised structures in the area. We have razed 85 structures from Goodwill Company to Manpada petrol pump today and will continue the drive for the next few days,” said B G Pawar, deputy municipal commissioner, encroachment.
The area had 90 structures of which the corporation did not demolish two temples, two residential structures and a shop. A team of 250 policemen and municipal officers were posted at the demolition site along with civic commissioner RA Rajeev.
The police had to resort to lathicharge and detained seven protesters. “We were informed about the demolition at 6pm on Tuesday. We staged a rasta roko at Kapurbawdi junction demanding a 15-day notice period,” said Mohan Tiwary, general secretary of Manpada shopkeepers association.
Pawar refuted the claims. “We had issued a notice and allotted a plot at Kothari compound over a month ago as per the general body resolution,” he said.
