The Gamdevi police have identified the accused as Rameshkumar Mekhia, a resident of Highway apartment in Sion.

According to the police officials Mekhi was employed with the 75-year-old complainant Dr B Sheelarao as an accountant since over last six years.

The officials said that the accused through his good behaviour and ‘show of honesty’ had won the trust of the complainant over the years. As a result of which Sheelarao had reportedly gave him the responsibility of managing all her finances.

The initial investigation done by the police revealed that during the period between 2004 till June this year, the accused siphoned around Rs 6 lakh from the IDBI account of the complainant, using her debit card.

The officials continued that the cheating came into light when the doctor chanced upon the bank statements and found discrepancies in it.

On further probing she realized that shopping was done and cash withdrawn from her account using debit card.

“The woman then lodged a complaint with the Gamdevi police station” said a police officer.
