These three lots will have a parking capacity of about 700 vehicles. The proposal has been pending with the civic body for the last two years.

The locations of the proposed mechanised parking lots are at Borivli (W) outside the railway station, two are in Powai near the market, while the remaining three are at Kurla, Powai and Matunga (E) have been stuck.

“The civic body is taking advice from the Urban Mass Transit Company regarding the the viability of the project,” said Aseem Gupta, additional municipal commissioner.

Two companies participated in the bids for six parking lots. But one company has withdrawn, which has made the fate of three parking lots at Kurla, Powai and Matunga uncertain. “However, we will wait for the company’s reply. If they are still willing participants, then the proposal will be tabled before the civic standing committee in a month. If they do not come forward, we will re-tender,” Gupta added.

According to recent civic reports, the city already has 14 lakh vehicles, with 5.37 per cent of new vehicles being registered every year. This has led to unplanned parking along roadsides, which in turn reduces space on roads by more than 20 per cent.

Except Powai, all other locations are close to the railway stations and commuters can park their vehicles and take a local train to reach their destinations.
