The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) on Friday advised housing societies to clean their overhead tanks regularly to avoid contamination. A senior official said on condition of anonymity as he is not authorised to speak to the media that a few precautions could go a long way.

Anand Deodhar, former head of the department, said: “Apart from cleaning tanks once every six months, societies should also check underground pipes inside their premises every four years.”
Civic Hydraulic Engineer Vinay Deshpande was not available for comment.
Additional Municipal Commissioner Aseem Gupta said the BMC was serious about cleaning up the water supply.
Health Minister Suresh Shetty said the ageing distribution network was a problem. “We will need huge funds to replace pipelines,” he added. Gupta said the pipelines were being replaced in phases.
Next week, Shetty and Environment Minister Sanjay Deotale are expected to check on the plan to clean up the water supply. They would also raise the issue in the Cabinet sub-committee on environmental issues.
