Sharma, who was arrested in connection with the Ram Narain Gupta alias Lakhan Bhaiyya fake encounter case, is currently in jail.

The CBI on Friday moved the sessions court, which was hearing the Lakhan Bhaiya case, and sought permission to interrogate Sharma with regard to Jamal’s killing. After perusing its application, the court allowed the agency to question Sharma in jail.

Sources from the court said that the agency had earlier sought permission to question Sharma on two occasions, but was rejected.

Jamal was killed in Naroda, Ahmedabad in 2003, in an alleged fake encounter. Officers of the Detection of Crime Branch (DCB), Ahmedabad, claimed that Jamal was on a mission to eliminate chief minister Narendra Modi, and was killed in a crossfire.

The CBI recently questioned encounter specialist sub-inspector Daya Nayak. Jamal’s brother Shabbir had alleged that former Mumbai journalist, Ketan Tirodkar, had revealed that Sadiq was in the custody of Nayak, who had handed him over to the Gujarat police a few days prior to his killing.
