Even as the crime branch continues to try and solve the murder of Sandhya Singh, sister of music director duo Jatin-Lalit, they have ended up solving the murder of a Thane-based woman instead.
This happens to be the seventh such case that the crime branch has solved unwittingly while tracking down Singh’s killers.
Joint commissioner of police, crime, Himanshu Roy said that they have arrested Ajay Jadhav alias Mustafa, 29, for killing his three-month pregnant wife Yasmin, 19, in a drunken spat at their Kalwa residence on December 13.
The Kalwa police registered a murder case against Jadhav and were on the lookout for him. “He was traced from his Panvel hideout and handed over to Kalwa police,” said Roy.
Nandkumar Gopale, senior inspector, property cell, said that since Singh’s last location was Ulwe in Navi Mumbai, they had been interrogating suspects based there.
The police were tipped off about a labourer in Ulwe who was heard confessing about having killed some women on December 13 while he was drunk.
“Since Sandhya Singh too had gone missing on December 13, we detained him for questioning, suspecting his involvement in her murder,” said Gopale.
During the interrogation, while Jadhav insisted he did not know who Singh was, he confessed that the woman he claimed to have killed was his wife.
“We found that there was indeed a murder case against him at the Kalwa police station,” Gopale added.
Singh, a Nerul resident, went missing along with jewellery worth Rs 20 lakh on December 13. Her skeletal remains were found near a creek in January.
