A Sewri fast track court acquitted six men, who were charged with robbing couples at Bandra Bandstand at knifepoint, for the lack of evidence. Advocate R.G. Gadgil, who defended two of the accused, said, on June 12, 2009, Kartik Kawale, a student at IIT-Kharagpur, complained to the Bandra police that he had been robbed of Rs 4,500 and cellphone when he was with a friend at Bandstand. On October 26, 2009, the Crime Branch arrested five members of the gang. The sixth was arrested later. They had reportedly confessed to their involvement in at least two cases, including Kawale’s. But Kawale did not turn up for deposing before the court. The case against the accused also weakened because of the absence of another witness, who went to the US. Subsequently, the court acquitted all six.
