A 20-year-old domestic help was arrested by the Goregaon police on Sunday for allegedly attempting to kill his employers after he got into a dispute with the couple over his outstanding salary.
The couple, Ashok (34) and Parmeshwari Basak (30), both scriptwriters for Bhojpuri films, have sustained injuries. "Parmeshwari is in a critical condition and needed to be operated on. Ashok is in a serious state as well," said Arun Jadhav, senior inspector, Goregaon police station.
The accused, Narendra Kajal, is a native of Haryana and has been working for three months as a domestic servant at the couple's residence in the Motilal Nagar area of Goregaon (west), according to the police.
The Basaks, the police said, have been living at the rented apartment in a chawl at Road No 3 of Motilal Nagar 1, for the past three years. They have five pet dogs.
At around 10 am on Sunday, Kajal reached the couple's residence in an inebriated condition after visiting a temple and got into an argument with Parmeshwari over his outstanding salary of two months. Ashok was in the bathroom at the time, the police said.
"It was a heated argument, and Kajal soon picked up a kitchen knife and slashed Parmeshwari twice on her stomach and once on her neck," said senior inspector Jadhav.
Hearing Parmeshwari's screams, her husband rushed to her aid. Kajal attacked him as well. "When Ashok tried to put up a fight, Kajal slashed him on his neck, arms and face," said Jadhav.
Their landlady, who lives in the room below, rushed upstairs to check on the couple after hearing a commotion, but she found the door locked. "All of us in the chawl could hear their cries for help and immediately rushed to the couple's. But the door was locked. A minute or two later, Parmeshwari gathered courage, unlatched the door, came out of the house and collapsed," said Jamuna Solanki, the landlady.
The neighbours then rescued Ashok from the house and locked the door so that Kajal couldn't escape. "Kajal was so drunk that he did not even attempt to flee. While one of the neighbours informed the police control room, others immediately rushed the couple to a private hospital in Goregaon (west)," said Jadhav.
They were later taken to Nair hospital. "The patient suffered a severe abdominal stab wound in which her intestine was torn. We operated on her on emergency basis. She is admitted in the trauma ward and her condition is critical," said Dr Mahesh Shah, deputy dean of Nair Hospital.
Kajal admitted to his crime and has been arrested under Section 307 (attempt to murder) of the Indian Penal Code, police said.
