Poonam Surve was arrested on Friday after Davkhare's family alleged that she had stolen 52 tolas of gold and a video camera from the MLC's house in Naupada in neighbouring Thane district, they said.

"Surve has been working at the Davkhare residence since a year and the family suspects that she may have stolen jewellery worth over Rs 9 lakh," police inspector Hemant Sawant said.

However, the police has not yet recovered the stolen gold from Surve.

"We are interrogating Surve and her family members. We are also trying to find out if someone else is behind the theft. Due to Davkhare's political activity several persons come and go to his house," Sawant said.

According to the police, the theft has been going on since two months. The family however, realised about the missing jewellery only on Thursday evening.

"Davkhare's daughter-in-law was cleaning the cupboard when she realised that several ornaments from the safe were missing," Sawant said.

Following this, the family lodged a complaint.
