Three commuters, Swapnil Jayavant Keluskar 20, Sandip K Patil, 21, and Sheikh Samad Abdullah, 19, were seriously injured and suffered 40% burns.

An official statement by the Central Railway denied there was a fire. “The Andheri train incident involves malfunctioning of the train transformer located in the second coach. This resulted in the leakage of oil, which is suspected to have caused burns to some passengers,” the statement said.

But victims claimed there was a blast, followed by fire and smoke. A senior Central Railway (CR) official said, “The faulty transformer did not cut off the power supply. Because of the high-voltage power, the safety valve of transformer malfunctioned, resulting in the oil spill, which led to the fire.”

The incident caused chaos on the Harbour line as 12 trains were cancelled and a delay of 15 minutes was reported.
