The city is just 27mm away from crossing the seasonal average rainfall after heavy rains lashed Mumbai on Saturday. And the weathermen have predicted a wet Sunday as well.
While suburbs received more rainfall at 132.4mm, south Mumbai recorded 66.8mm rain. The city also witnessed heavy downpour on Friday night. According to 24-hour data by the India Meteorological Department (IMD), from Friday 8.30am to Saturday 8.30am, Santacruz recorded 83mm rain and Colaba received 37.9mm.
Since June 1, the city has received an average rainfall of 2,267mm. The seasonal average rainfall from June 1 to September 30 is 2,294mm.
“There is an upper air cyclonic circulation over Orissa and a low pressure area is likely to form over the same area. There has been a general strengthening of the westerly winds, as a result of which widespread rainfall has occurred over Maharashtra,” said VK Rajeev, director, western region, IMD. The weathermen have predicted intermittent spells of rainfall with heavy to very heavy rainfall at some places on Sunday.
