Gold worth Rs. 62 lakh seized at airport

In two separate seizures, Customs officials on Tuesday seized more than 2kg of gold worth Rs. 62.5 lakh from two Sri Lankan nationals, who were attempting to smuggle the gold into the city from Dubai and Singapore respectively.

In two separate seizures, Customs officials on Tuesday seized more than 2kg of gold worth Rs. 62.5 lakh from two Sri Lankan nationals, who were attempting to smuggle the gold into the city from Dubai and Singapore respectively.

In the first case, officials intercepted a passenger who came from Dubai via a Jet Airways flight early in the morning.

Two gold biscuits, weighing 580 gm and worth Rs. 17.5 lakh, were recovered from his socks.

In the second incident, officials intercepted a passenger coming to the city from Singapore in a Jet Airways flight.

He had concealed six gold biscuits in his undergarments. The gold biscuits weighed 1.5 kg and were worth Rs. 45 lakh.

Both passengers had crossed the green channel without declaring the gold they were carrying.
