Two persons were arrested in connection with a minor explosion that took place near Air India Colony on Thursday.
The special squad of Vishwas Nangre Patil, additional commissioner of police (west) arrested 20-year-old Santosh Shetty, who roped in a physically handicapped acquaintance to 'punish' his lover, and her parents who refused to get them married.
According to the police, Shetty was in a relationship with a girl for the past six years. However, her parents refused his proposal to marry her. Around two months ago, when Shetty asked the woman to marry him, she refused. This infuriated him and he decided to take revenge by blowing up their car, which was usually parked at a Kurla garage.
Shetty roped in Sanjay Salvi, 31, who suffers from polio. Together, they purchased a remote-controlled toy helicopter and used the circuit of the toy for making a bomb. “The explosive was sourced from crackers; screws were added as shrapnel,” Patil said. “On Thursday evening, the duo decided to conduct a trial. While Salvi was carrying the bomb on his wheelchair, Shetty followed him on his motorbike. However the bomb went off mid-way, when Salvi accidentally pressed the joystick,” added Patil.
The duo has been charged with attempt to murder, and under relevant sections of the Explosives Act.
