This is the third case this year in which an officer from the same police station is involved in a corruption case.

The ACB said the complainant in the case owns a sweet shop in Mahim.

“The complainant’s shop was damaged after a bus crashed into it at high speed. A case was registered at the Mahim police station,” said an ACB officer.

The complainant was given a copy of the FIR. However, he needed a copy of the police panchnama so that he could apply for insurance. “The accused, Anil Bhaskar Sonawane, demanded a bribe of Rs 50,000, which he lowered to Rs 25,000, after negotiations. He agreed to accept Rs 10,000 as the first instalment,” the officer said.

The complainant, who did not wish to pay the bribe, approached the ACB, which verified the case and laid a trap on Thursday. .

On February 6, a senior inspector at Mahim police station, Dastgir Mullah, was arrested while allegedly accepting a bribe of Rs 10,000.

In March, Ashok Mulchand Gaud, an assistant inspector, was arrested for allegedly demanding Rs 1.75 lakh from a developer.
