Mumbai: Driver kills mother, child on footpath, oil trail leads cops to him

A 24-year-old man, who was inebriated, drove his car onto a footpath in Dombivli near Mumbai killing a 35-year-old woman and her eight-year-old daughter early Wednesday. The woman and the child died on the spot. The accused fled from the scene and was arrested after the police followed the trail of an oil leak from his car. The accused, Iqbal Nizam Shaikh, 24, is a resident of Thakurli and a driver by profession.
The police said the complainant is Justin Josh Vidayshil, 38, a resident of Dombivli who suffered an injury and whose car was first hit by the accused.
The incident took place around 3.30am when Vidayshil was driving his Skoda and heading from the east to the west. “The accused coming from the station road was driving rashly. He said because he was travelling at high speed he crashed into Vidayshil’s car and lost control of his vehicle. He then drove the car ahead and drove over woman and her daughter who were sleeping on the footpath,” said a police officer from Dombivli police station.
“Both victims died on the spot. We are looking for their relatives or family members,” said SD Awghade, assistant inspector, Dombivli police.
“After the car hit the footpath, the oil tank sprung a leak. A team was formed, headed by sub-inspector Mahajan. We followed the oil trail on the road and found the driver in the car that had stopped around 750metres from the accident site. He was produced in Kalyan court on Wednesday and is in police custody till September 28,” Awghade said.
The police are also checking CCTV footage from adjoin ing shops and hotels. A case has been registered under various sections of the IPC and of the Motor Vehicle Act.
