No nuke deal, but UN reforms to top Indo-Japanese summit meet

However, there there would be no deal on civilian nuclear cooperation between the two nations.

The two leaders would also discuss a variety of strategic issues including maritime cooperation and sharing of intelligence apart from reviewing economic cooperation.

"Japan is the only nation to have suffered a nuclear attack and we have a very peaceful nuclear policy. Japan does not possess, produce or allow any nuclear weapons in its territory. There will not be any deal or agreement on any nuclear cooperation between us at the summit meeting," Kazuo Kodama, Press Secretary of the Japanese foreign ministry told reporters here this evening.

While acknowledging India's "compulsions" in acquiring nuclear weapons, Kodama said Hatoyama would try to impress upon Singh the need to ratify Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty (CTBT).

"Both India and Japan are committed to complete elimination of nuclear weapons and we understand the compulsions under which India has acquired those. We (Japan) also welcome India's unilateral moratorium on nuclear tests, but our overall equations will be more positive, if India signs the CTBT," he said.
