Jyoti, 20, had been working as a maid at the Irani house since August last year after being recommended by Jerry Rodrigues, who had been taking care of Jyoti and her younger sister ever since their father passed away. According to Rodrigues, Irani had initially complained about Jyoti's efficiency but had continued to employ her.

Jyoti alleged that the family tortured her by pouring hot water on her and slashing her with a knife. "I was shocked to hear this since I knew the family for a long time," said Rodrigues. Jyoti was sent to Cooper hospital for a medical test, following which a case was registered by the Oshiwara police against the Iranis.
