The Bandra police on Sunday arrested Raju Sahu, originally from Uttar Pradesh, from near Kota railway station in Rajasthan.

The accused had asked Raju Rana, his employer, to meet him near the station with a ransom of Rs 2.3 lakh.

The police said Sahu used to work at a sandwich stall run by Rana near Bandstand in Bandra (West).

Sahu was enraged after Rana refused to pay him Rs 300, which he needed to meet his sister’s funeral expenses.

Sahu had told another stall owner that he would avenge Rana for refusing to pay him, the police added.

“He picked up my son, Parameshwar, and went missing on November 29,” said Rana.

On December 4, Rana received a ransom call from Sahu. Sahu initially asked for Rs 3 lakh, but later brought the amount down to Rs 2.3 lakh. Rana then lodged a complaint of kidnapping against Sahu with the Bandra police station.

During investigation, the police learnt that though the ransom call was made from Kota, the subscriber identity module card was registered in Uttar Pradesh.

Sahu was arrested when he came to collect the cash from near Kota railway station. “However, the child was not with him,” said Sub-Inspector Vishnu Kesarkar of Bandra police station.

The 14-month-old was later rescued from Sahu’s native village in Gonda district in Uttar Pradesh.

Sahu had kept Parameshwar in his sister’s care.
