The Congress, over the last few days, had made a concerted effort to have its candidate elected mayor of the civic body that has a budget of Rs 19,000 crore. This is more than the budget of states like Kerala and Goa.

The Congress’ hopes were dashed after seven corporators of the Samajwadi Party boycotted the elections, alleging that the Congress had a tacit alliance with Raj Thackeay’s Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS), which has been opposing migration from North India into the city.

The MNS’ six corporators also abstained.
