A police officer from the Nehru Nagar police station, on condition of anonymity because he is not authorised to talk to the media, said, “The deceased, Shakeel Ahmed Hussain, 21, and Zubair Ahmed Abidali, 22, were on their bike on the road adjacent to Pradarshani Circle in Chembur. They were on their way Hussain’s house in Thane.”

The officer added, “The truck driver, Kurankumar Gurubaksh Singh, 30, was speeding. He lost control of the vehicle, which then hit the bike. Singh was, however, not under the influence of alcohol.”

“The driver initially fled the spot because he was worried that the locals would lynch him. However, he later presented himself before us and we arrested him for rash and negligent driving and culpable homicide not amounting to murder,” the officer said.

“The family members of the two youngsters in Thane have been informed about the incident. Both Hussain and Abidali were college students,” he added.
