SSC results: Few Mumbai schools join the 90s club

Of the 3.73 lakh students who took the exam in Mumbai division, including Thane, Palghar and Raigad, 3.19 lakh students passed

The secondary school certificate (SSC) examination results were a mixed bag for city schools. Although some students matched the performance of their CBSE and ICSE counterparts, scoring above 99%, most schools saw fewer students scoring more than 90%, and more students scoring in the 70%-80% range. Disappointed, many students have also demanded re-evaluation.

Of the 3.73 lakh students who took the exam in Mumbai division, including Thane, Palghar and Raigad, 3.19 lakh students passed. Among these, 3.57% students bagged 90% and above, it was 3.69% last year. On the other hand, the number of students scoring 85% to 90%, jumped to 6.02% from 5.95% last year.

School principals attributed the trend to the no-fail policy that mandates automatic promotion of students from Classes 1 to 8. “This is our third batch of continuous comprehensive evaluation (CCE) - where students are assessed on multiple parameters, and not just exams. Our school topper was at 96% last year and this year it has dropped to 92.6%,” said Aruna Pandya, principal of Shree Ram Welfare School, Andheri, which secured 97.81% pass rate, lower than 98.69% last year. “Last year, we had seven students scoring above 90, this year it is only two.”

It was a similar story for Parle Tilak School, Vile Parle (Marathi medium). “We have registered a dip in percentages. Our highest has fallen to 95.61% from 96%,” said Wadekar, principal of the school.

Around 20% of the total students scored in the 70%-80% range, much better than last year. Interestingly, the number of students scoring below 45% has reduced to 9.68% of the total students, from 11.25% last year.

At South Indian Education Society (SIES) School, Matunga, there was an increase in students scoring 90%, but the school said teachers put in hard work to improve the performances. “Due to the no-fail system, our teachers struggled a lot to get students to perform on a par,” said Kalyani Arumugum, principal of the school, which recorded a pass rate of 97.35%. She added, “Students are not happy with the results and many are going to apply for re-evaluation.”

But some of the schools recorded an improvement in the results. “Our school has done extremely well. Our Marathi medium school at Kurla has actually given a push to the overall result. The pass percentage here last year was 53% and this year it has reached 72%,” said Cynthia Dawson, principal of Swami Vivekanand School and junior college, Chembur.

Even St Mary’s High School, Mazgaon (SSC) said the results were better. “My school secured 100% results for the second time in a row. Even on an individual level, students have done very well. I think this is majorly because the competitive spirit is increasing among parents and students alike,” Father Jude Fernandes, principal of the school.
