From April 2001 to March 2009, the death of 1184 persons in police custody across the country was reported to the National Human Rights Commission. “Most of these deaths took place within 48 hours of the victims being taken into police custody,” the report prepared by Asian Centre for Human Rights in June 2009 states.
Maharashtra has recorded 192 deaths, while Uttar Pradesh and Gujarat have reported 128 and 113 deaths respectively.
Out of the 192 deaths in Maharashtra, 20 deaths have been reported in Mumbai.
