The accused, identified as Bari Pednekar alias Omkar, during interrogation said he needed money as he wanted to buy his girlfriend an expensive gift, the Kanjurmarg police said.

“The incident took place late on October 26,” said an officer on condition of anonymity. “Pednekar and his accomplice broke into MMRDA official Prakash Batenkar’s flat at Karve Nagar late in the night. They stole two high-end mobile phones and gold jewellery kept in the house.”

Batenkar, 44, who was alone at home since his family had gone to his native place, realised that he had been robbed after he woke up in the morning.

Inspector Tanaji Pawade, Kanjurmarg police station, said: “Pednekar made the mistake of giving one of the stolen phones to his girlfriend. We traced it to her home. The girlfriend was not aware that the mobile phone was stolen.”
