The Cambridge International Examinations (CIE) body that conducts that IGCSE, AS and A Levels (Class 12) exams released the data for June 2009 and May 2010 exams on Monday.

“Indian students have done exceptionally well this year; it is the country’s best performance,” said Ian Chambers, regional manager of CIE for South Asia. “Mumbai has a large number of CIE-affiliated schools so Mumbai students did particularly well.”

Students from Utpal Shanghvi School in Juhu, Dhirubai Ambani International School (DAIS) in Bandra, BD Somani International School in Cuffe Parade and Podar International School in Santacruz were among those who topped in the world.

Indian students topped in Accounting, Mathematics (without coursework), Hindi (as a second language), Food and Nutrition, Environmental Management, Sociology and Physical Education.

The AS level (Class 11 exam) toppers were in French and Environmental Management.

“None of us expected to top but we are thrilled to have done so well,” said Arpita Bhabhera, from Utpal Shanghvi, the IGCSE world topper in Accounting.

Aftab Chitwalwala from DAIS stood first in India in all IGCSE subjects combined while Hardik Parikh from Utpal Shaghvi came in second.

Eleven students from city schools also topped the country in individual subjects at the IGCSE exams.

“We are delighted that our IGCSE students have brought further accolades to the school with their record-breaking performance in the 2010 examinations and reinforcing our belief that effort pays,” said Nita Ambani, chairperson of DAIS, many of whose students featured as toppers, in a press release.

Seven students from Mumbai topped individual subjects at the A-Levels exams in the country including in Biology, Physics and Economics.

There are 52 schools offering the IGCSE qualification and 22 schools the A-levels qualification in Mumbai.
