The wife of late deputy commissioner of police, Sanjay Banerjee, has claimed her husband did not commit suicide but was killed after his service pistol fired when it accidentally fell.
Banerjee, 43, attached to the ATS, had visited the Goa Portuguesa Hotel at the Ghodbunder Road in Thane on March 23 for lunch with his wife Sushmita and their two sons when the incident took place.
Sources in the Thane police told HT on Wednesday that Sushmita said the accident took place when Banerjee tried to take his handkerchief out from the pocket of his trousers. The service pistol, a 9mm Glock, came loose from the holster and fell on the floor.
It fired on impact and the solitary bullet hit Banerjee. Thane police commissioner KP Raghuvanshi confirmed the development, but said, “The probe is on and we have not concluded anything yet".
