UN-Habitat, a United Nations organisation that promotes socially and environmentally sustainable cities, awarded Thane the generous cash prize after recognising the civic body's efforts to use green fuels, said TMC's public relations officer, Sandeep Malvi.

Chosen from among 16 cities in India, Thane represented the country at a UN conference in Doha that focused on mainly on issues related to climate change. TMC commissioner RA Rajiv was invited as guest speaker.

While the UN project will be implemented in Thane in India, three other countries will undertake similar ventures - Brazil, Indonesia and South Africa.

The TMC will now have three years to use the grant to reduce the emission of greenhouse gases in Thane. It has implemented several solar power projects before.
