Three persons were killed in three different accidents reported in the city since Sunday.
In the first incident, a 72-year-old woman died after she was run over by a luxury bus in Borivli (West). The incident took place around 5.30am on Monday. The deceased, Nalini Lakhani, was walking to the road when the bus hit her from behind. She was dragged for about 20 feet and died after she came between the wheels of the bus.
Locals took her to Bhagwati hospital where she was declared dead on arrival. Lakhani was on her way to a nearby temple from her residence in Borivli (West) when the accident took place. Lakhani is survived by two sons.
The bus and the driver of the vehicle, Samsher Singh, 42, was arrested by the MHB Colony police. “The driver was on his way from Bhagwati Hospital to the parking area at Link Road when the incident took place,” said a police inspector from MHB Colony police station. Police have sent blood samples of the accused to find out whether he was driving under the influence of alcohol. “I saw Lakhani, who was my neighbour, dragged in front of my eyes. I then lodged a complaint with the police,” said Anant Kumar Shah, the complainant in the case.
In another incident near the Kanjurmarg flyover on the Eastern Express Highway, a cleaner, Rajkumar Ramnath Verma, 26, was killed when his dumper collided with another dumper around 6.15am on Sunday. Police said the dumper driver, V Kumar, 26, escaped from the spot, but surrendered at the Vikhroli police station a few hours later.
In a third incident, a 22-year-old cleaner, Balbir Singh, was crushed to death while he was sleeping on the road, by an unidentified heavy vehicle at Tagore Nagar in Vikhroli on Sunday morning. Police said Singh may have been crushed under the wheels of a truck.
In the fourth incident, three persons travelling in an autorickshaw were injured when a BEST bus crashed into it at the Cheetah camp bus stop in Trombay on Monday around 3.30pm. The Trombay police have detained the bus driver and recorded their statements.
