The Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) has arrested two men and seized a large consignment of fake notes.
The Kalachowkie unit of the ATS, acting on a tip-off, arrested Nadim Rangrez, 35, and Arif Rangrez, 35, near Pritam hotel in Dadar on Monday and recovered 1,600 notes of Rs 500 denomination from Nadim. Arif was found carrying 400 fake notes of Rs 500 denomination.
Additional director general of police (ATS) Rakesh Maria said the duo, who hail from Aligarh in Uttar Pradesh, had brought the notes from Bangladesh. “They distributed these notes in Andhra Pradesh and Maharashtra,” Maria said.
He denied that the duo was connected to the four men who had been arrested last month from Nagpada. Officials said the notes had been brought into India via Malda district in West Bengal. “The notes are of good quality. It is difficult to make out that they are fake,” an officer said. “The two men have already distributed a large number of fake notes of denominations of Rs 1,000 and Rs 500.”
The two men have been remanded in police custody until December 28.
