The duo, Ronak Jamil Shaikh (25) and Razzi Ahmed Mohd Ayub Shaikh (22), had come to Mumbai from Bihar around a month-and-a-half ago and were working as daily wage labourers for a rail project at Mahalaxmi.

They were living with an uncle from their village in Chembur.

Officials with the Government Railway Police (GRP) said Ronak and Razzi had boarded the train at Mumbai Central and were to get off at Dadar station, from where they would change over to the central line.

The duo was standing on the footboard and hanging out of the train and as the train passed the overhead bridge after Lower Parel station, they collided with a pole that’s just one metre away from the tracks.

“They lost their balance and fell of the running train,” the official said.

The GRP officials went to the accident site after they were informed about the incident by other commuters.

The youngsters were taken to Nair, but were declared dead on arrival. “They had grievous injuries as they hit the pole,” an official said.

“Daily commuters are aware about the proximity of the pole to the railway tracks at that particular spot so they are cautious. The deceased were new to the city and so unaware about it,” said Bharat Rane, senior police inspector of Mumbai Central GRP.

The duo’s uncle has identified the bodies. Their families in Bihar have been informed about the incident.
