An officer from Dharavi police told HT on condition of anonymity, “We are trying to identify the shop from where the bottle was purchased. This will help us find out if Jhota purchased it, and if there was anyone accompanying him or if someone else brought it.”

The officer said the police would use the batch number on the bottle to trace the distributor and eventually the shop. The police plan to quiz shop attendants about identities of those who purchased vodka on Sunday. They are also hoping to find CCTV footage, which could lead them to the suspects.

The Dharavi police have also found witnesses who saw Jhota come to the Dharavi grain traders association office around 11am on Sunday. It was earlier believed that Jhota had come to the office late on Sunday afternoon.
