A 47-year-old man allegedly murdered his wife by repeatedly hitting her with a mortar and pestle before committing suicide on Sunday night, police said on Monday.

At their house in Greater Noida, police have recovered a suicide note, wherein the man stated that they had problems in their marriage.

The marital discord led him to kill his wife, the note reportedly said.

Police officials said residents of Galaxy Vega, the housing society where the couple lived, told them that the duo — Manisha Kohli and Girish Bhatnagar — had been married for nearly two years.

“The suicide note mentioned that Manisha suspected her husband of having an extramarital affair and that the two would often argue over the issue. It led to Bhatnagar killing his wife by smashing her head with a mortar and pestle,” said Akhilesh Tripathi, station house officer, Bisrakh police station.

Maintaining that they were alerted about the incident by Kohli’s brother, police said the two were taken to a nearby hospital, where doctors declared them dead on arrival.

Superintendent of police (rural) Ashish Shrivastav said, “Manisha’s brother was trying to call her for a while but was unable to get through to her. He even tried calling on the society intercom but there was no response from his sister. After a while, he contacted the nearest police post. The police team broke open the door of the flat and found the two bodies. While the woman was lying on the floor, Bhatnagar was found hanging from a ceiling fan.”

Stating that the bodies have been sent for a postmortem examination, police said while Bhatnagar — who hailed from Indirapuram in Ghaziabad —was self-employed, Manisha — who hailed from Delhi — was a homemaker.

The couple had no children, police said, adding that the woman’s family has not filed any formal complaint regarding the murder yet.

In a similar incident, 28-yearold Vasant Singh had allegedly murdered his 26-year-old wife, Neha Singh, at their residence in Sector 93 on the evening of August 2.

Although no suicide note was recovered from the spot, police suspected that the man had first beat up his wife in a fit of rage and then hanged himself since the two had some marital problems.
