Italian Daniele Bennati won the 188.5-km 17th stage of the Tour de France, which started on Thursday without its leader Michael Rasmussen and the Cofidis team.

Alberto Contador of Spain finished in the bunch to take the overall leader's yellow jersey which had been Rasmussen's.

Rasmussen was sacked by his Rabobank team on Wednesday because they said he had lied about his training whereabouts while Cofidis left the race after Italian Cristian Moreni tested positive for the male sex hormone testosterone.

Lampre rider Bennati outsprinted German Markus Fothen of the Gerolsteiner team at the end of a 180-km breakaway. Martin Elmiger of Switzerland was third for the AG2r team.
