Sudha sets new mark in steeplechase

Uttar Pradesh distance runner Sudha Singh set new national mark in the women’s 3000m steeplechase event on the third day of the national inter-state athletics championships today.

Uttar Pradesh distance runner Sudha Singh set new national mark in the women’s 3000m steeplechase event on the third day of the national inter-state athletics championships on Thursday.

The 26-year-old Asian Games champion clocked 9:45.60 to improve upon her national record of 9:47.70 set last year. The effort helped Sudha achieve the qualifying mark for the August 10-18 world athletics championships to be held in Moscow.

Bhide’s allegations
New Delhi: Hockey Olympian and former India women's team skipper Rekha Bhide has alleged harassment at the hands of a key Hockey India official because she had protested against some ‘undemocratic’ actions. Rekha, who is also president of the Maharashtra association, in her written complaint to sports minister Jitendra Singh, has alleged that she is being singled out as she has pointed out discrepancy in the functioning of the federation.

Divij, Purav move up
New Delhi: Third seeded Indian pair of Divij Sharan and Purav Raja defeated Andrej Martin of Slovak Republic and Hans Podlipnik-Castillo of Chile 6-3, 1-6, 10-8 to enter the quarterfinal of the ATP Challenger event in Furth, Germany.

Pune: Ankita Raina beat third seed Nigina Abdurakhimova of Uzbekistan 6-4, 7-6 (7/3) to reach the semifinals of the ITF women’s tennis tournament in Karshi, Uzbekistan Thursday.

Saina in quarters
Bangkok: Defending champion Saina Nehwal and HS Prannoy reached the quarterfinals of the Thailand Grand Prix Gold badminton tournament. Top seed Saina thrashed Indonesia's Febby Angguni 21-12, 21-11 to set up a clash with eighth seed Juan Gu of Singapore. In men's singles, Prannoy outplayed fellow Indian 10th seed Anand Pawar 19-21, 21-13, 21-15.

Vishnu holds Sandro
Albena (bulgaria): Grandmaster-in-waiting V Vishnu Prasanna held Argentine GM Sandro Mareco to a draw and stay in joint lead (4.5 points) in the 5th round of the Grand Europe Albena International Chess. Abhijeet Gupta was upset by Brazilian IM Roberto Junio Brito Molina.

Telefunken in final
New Delhi: Gaurav Kochhar’s 77 helped Telefunken beat Collage Group by four runs to enter the Lala Raghubir cricket final. Delhi U-16 captain Himmat Singh hit 106 to help Hargopal Club enter the semis. In GG Dutt cricket, Manan Sharma (4/44) and Mayank Sidana (106) helped FCI enter the semis.
