Hoping to be future alliance partners with the JD(U), which snapped its 17-year-old ties with the BJP, the Congress sought to play safe and maintained that such unfortunate incidents should not be politicised.

However, not wanting to completely burn its bridges with the RJD of Lalu Prasad the Congress sought to justify its reaction to the incident. "RJD's reaction on painful meal poisoning in Bihar is on expected lines but BJP leaders are behaving as if they were waiting for some mishap," party general secretary Shakeel Ahmed tweeted.

The Congress only had a small piece of advice for the Bihar government. "Stringent action should be taken against the guilty and the state government should ensure that such incidents don't recur," he added.
