The tragedy occurred when a group comprising mostly women was crossing over to another platform through the foot overbridge at the station.

They were returning after taking the holy dip in the Ganga at Samariaghat in Barauni at the end of the Malmas month.

Additional director general (railways) P N Rai said in Patna that two passengers trains arrived at platform nos. 6 and 7 simultaneously. In order to catch the trains the passengers rushed towards the platforms leading to the stampede. He said of the several injured passengers in the stampede, the condition of five women was serious. A seriously injured woman succumbed to her injuries while on way to the hospital while the rest were admitted to the ICU in the railway hospital.

Senior DCM, Samastipur, M A Humayun said the stampede took place when some women slipped on the overbridge as they hurried to catch a Darbhanga-bound passenger train.

Meanwhile, railway officers along with the medical team and local administrative officials rushed to the spot and were camping at the railway station. Agitated passengers were subsequently pacified and sent to their destinations.
