Is copy right the new right to copy? From scripts, scenes, characters and songs to, now, posters, Bollywood has often been accused of plagiarism. Is our desi film fraternity running out of ideas? Here are some of the posters of our Bollywood films, in recent times, which have pronounced similarites with posters of Western films and projects. Ek Villain vs Step Up The yet-to-be released film’s trailer has crossed a million views online. But the poster, featuring Shraddha Kapoor and Sidharth Malhotra, has got many tongues wagging. A closer look at Ek Villain’s poster gives one a sense of déjà vu. It reminds one of the American dance film, Step Up (2006), featuring Channing Tatum and Jenna Dewan-starrer, Step Up.Text: Geetanjali Taragi

Xpose vs The Great GatsbyWhen the first look of Himesh Reshammiya and Yo Yo Honey Singh-starrer Xpose was released recently, one could not help but notice the uncanny resemblance the poster had with Leonardo Di Caprio’s The Great Gatsby (2013). The poster, as well as the trailer, seem deeply inspired by the Hollywood blockbuster. And this is not the first time that the composer/producer has been accused of lifting ideas. The poster of Himesh Reshammiya’s romantic comedy Damadamm, in 2011, was accussed of ripping off the cover of Mad magazine (American humour) which featured American pop sensation, Justin Beiber.

Krrish 3 vs Superhero moviesOur own desi superhero Krrish took an inspiration from the superhero flicks from the West. Just a glance at the posters of Krrish 3 (2013), and you know what we are talking about. From The Man of Steel (far right), The Dark Knight to The Dark Knight Rises — all seem to have played muse for the Hrithik Roshan film.

Ra.One vs Batman BeginsAnother batman movie, another ‘inspired’ tale. This time it was Shah Rukh Khan-starrer Ra.One that released in 2011. The movie’s poster, where Shah Rukh is carrying the damsel in distress, Kareena Kapoor Khan, in his arms is a complete rip off of Christopher Nolan’s Batman Begins poster.

Ram-Leela vs Revenge One of the biggest hits of 2013, Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Ram-Leela, managed to bag several awards. However, social media was abuzz that one of the film’s posters was lifted from popular American sitcom, Revenge’s 2011 poster. While Ram-Leela’s poster featured the lead pair Ranveer Singh and Deepika Padukone, Revenge had Emily VanCamp.

Murder 3 vs Jennifer’s BodyThe poster of Murder 3, 2013, that had red hot lips with drops of blood dripping from them, looked quite inspired by Megan Fox-starrer Jennifer’s Body (2009). The only difference was — the Randeep Hooda-Aditi Rao Hydari-starrer’s poster had a rose stem instead. You take a look and decide!

Dhoom: 3 vs The Dark Knight The film that released last year might have raked in a lot of moolah at the box office, but the poster featuring Aamir Khan attracted attention for being ‘inspired’ by Hollywood movies Christian Bale’s The Dark Knight (above, right) and Bourne Ultimatum (2007).
