Photos: Friday prayers turn violent in UP as anti-CAA stir continues across India

The nationwide agitation against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) continue today, with violence erupting in several parts of Uttar Pradesh. Tension simmered in other several cities—Gorakhpur, Deoband (Saharanpur), Muzaffarnagar, Hapur, Shamli, Prayagraj, Bulandshahr, Meerut, Firozabad, Varanasi, Farukkhabad, Bijnore, Bhadoi and Hamirpur—as thousands defied pleas by authorities to exercise restraint a day after large-scale violence was reported across the state. Internet access over mobile phones was suspended in major towns in UP, following explicit state government orders, telecom industry officials said. Protests took place in several other cities like Delhi, Mumbai, Bhopal, Jodhpur, Hyderabad, among others.
